Ron Ryan: A True Friend of DOC and Legendary Advocate for Wichita

Ron had served on DOC’s Board of Directors since 2012.
If there was a community event or aviation-centered project in Wichita that promoted the Air Capital of the World, more than likely Ron Ryan had a hand in it.
Wichita aviation legend and community philanthropist Ron Ryan passed away on February 27 at the age of 87.
Serving on the Board of Directors for DOC’s Friends since its inception in 2012, Ron was passionate about DOC’s story and its restoration. He worked tirelessly to advocate for DOC, donating his leadership, time, investments, and connections to help our organization become what it is today.
In addition to his service on DOC’s board of directors, he offered his leadership over the years to serve on many other community organizations, including the Wichita Airport Authority, Kansas Aviation Museum, Wichita Riverfest and Wichita Wagonmasters, Boy Scouts of America, Greater Wichita YMCA, Newman University, Kansas Food Bank, and the Wichita Downtown Development Committee, to name a few.
“Ron was a landmark of the aviation industry and a cornerstone of our Wichita community,” said Josh Wells, B-29 DOC executive director. “Throughout his life, he worked tirelessly to improve the lives of those around him through his businesses, his leadership, and the organizations of which he was passionate. His smile and laughter were contagious…and his generosity was one-of-a-kind. I will deeply miss Ron’s friendship, and our community will miss one of its biggest cheerleaders.”

In 2021, Ron was honored as the recipient of the Wichita Aero Club Trophy in recognition of his outstanding aviation accomplishments, exceptional career, and dedication to the Wichita aviation industry and community. He was also deeply committed to supporting military families, both during his leadership at Ryan Aviation (the nation’s largest charter airline at the time) and later in life when he served as an Honorary Commander of McConnell Air Force Base’s 931st Air Refueling Wing.
“The B-29 DOC board and our entire DOC family mourn Ron’s passing, and while we celebrate his life and accomplishments, our prayers are with Ron’s family,” Wells said.
