B-29 DOC Tour Stop in Tulsa Cancelled Due to Continued Aircraft Maintenance

The B-29 DOC History Restored Tour scheduled to land at the Tulsa Air and Space Museum this weekend has been canceled due to continued unplanned aircraft maintenance.

“Following maintenance operations in Moses Lake, WA, since mid-June and a subsequent series of flight operations to travel back home to Wichita and then on to Tulsa, we have discovered the aircraft needs further monitoring before DOC can be fully returned to tour duty,” said Josh Wells, B-29 DOC chief executive officer. “That work and flight observation by our maintenance team is going to take time, which will not allow us to arrive in Tulsa this weekend as planned.”

DOC is one of 1,644 Boeing B-29 Superfortress bombers built in Wichita, Kan., during World War II, and one of only two B-29 bombers still airworthy and flying today. The 2026 tour season marks the 10-year anniversary of DOC’s return to flight following restoration that was completed in 2016.

“We are privileged to operate a true national treasure, and with the privilege of flying an 80-year-old aircraft comes a tremendous responsibility. While our team follows a detailed and comprehensive inspection and maintenance program designed to ensure the highest levels of safety and reliability, unexpected maintenance needs can occasionally arise. This is a normal part of operating and preserving a historic aircraft of this age and complexity. When these matters arise, we take the time necessary to address every issue thoroughly because there is no higher priority than the safety of our crew, passengers, volunteers, and the communities we visit. I am very proud of the work our maintenance is doing to keep DOC flying and to preserve this remarkable piece of American aviation history for future generations,” Wells said.

Passengers who purchased ride flight tickets for the event in Tulsa will be contacted directly via email and refunds will be processed. Meanwhile, conversations are already underway with the Tulsa Air and Space Museum to reschedule the B-29 DOC tour stop in Tulsa either later this tour season or in 2027.
