B-29 DOC & P-51 Gunfighter are headed to Georgetown, SC: Oct. 1-4

B-29 DOC and P-51 Gunfighter—two World War II-era aviation icons—will bring the B-29 DOC History Restored Tour to Georgetown, SC, October 1-4. Both historic aircraft will be available for public tours and ride flight experiences during the four-day tour stop at Georgetown County Airport.

DOC is one of 1,644 Boeing B-29 Superfortress bombers built in Wichita, Kansas, during World War II—and today, it is one of only two still airworthy and flying. The P-51 Gunfighter, a D-model Mustang, is equally rare, with fewer than 150 of the roughly 15,000 produced during the war still in existence.

“These warbirds are more than historic aircraft—they are storytellers that connect us directly to the men and women who designed, built, flew and maintained them during World War II,” said B-29 DOC CEO Josh Wells. “Having the B-29 and P-51 together on the same ramp gives people a rare opportunity to see two aircraft that played important and complementary roles in the war and to better understand the people and missions behind them. Keeping these aircraft flying and bringing them together in communities across the country ensures those stories, sacrifices and legacies are preserved for future generations.”

DOC and Gunfighter will be available for public ground and cockpit/ramp tours beginning Thursday, Oct. 1 through Sunday, Oct. 4.

“The B-29 and P-51 tell a powerful story of teamwork in the skies of World War II,” said P-51 Gunfighter Pilot and Tour Coordinator Jeff Linebaugh. “The B-29 brought extraordinary range and striking power to the fight, while the P-51 provided the protection bombers needed in contested skies. Together, they demonstrated that success in the air wasn’t achieved by one aircraft or one crew—it was achieved by people and machines working together toward a common mission.”

Public access will be available Thursday and Friday, Oct. 1 and 2, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and on Saturday, Oct. 3 from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. B-29 DOC Flight Experience Rides will be available Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 3 and 4, at 9 and 10:30 a.m. P-51 Gunfighter will be available for ride flights Oct. 2-4 and will be on static ramp display throughout the event when it is not flying.

Public access for this event will be through the main terminal building at Georgetown County Airport (129 Airport Rd, Georgetown, SC 29440). Ramp and cockpit tour admission will be $10 per person or $20 per family (tickets available at the gate the day of the event).
