B-29 DOC & P-51 Gunfighter to Spend Labor Day Weekend in Cincinnati

B-29 DOC and Gunfighter

The B-29 DOC History Restored Tour with P-51 Gunfighter is headed to Cincinnati for Lunken Airport Days over Labor Day Weekend, September 3–7, 2026.

DOC is one of 1,644 Boeing B-29 Superfortress bombers built in Wichita, Kansas, during World War II—and today, it is one of only two still airworthy and flying. The P-51 Gunfighter, a D-model Mustang, is equally rare, with fewer than 150 of the roughly 15,000 produced during the war still in existence.

“The B-29 and P-51 symbolize the teamwork that defined Allied airpower during World War II,” said P-51 Gunfighter pilot and tour coordinator Jeff Linebaugh. “The bomber delivered the mission, while the fighter provided the protection needed to see it through. Together, they demonstrate how coordination, courage, and strategy helped achieve victory in the skies.”

The event will be hosted by Cincinnati Warbirds EAA Squadron 18 and will be part of the annual Lunken Airport Days. Both warbirds will be available for public ramp access when they are not operating ride flights. Cockpit tours will be available for B-29 DOC throughout the week.

“The partnership between the B-29 and the P-51 helped change the course of the air war in the Pacific,” said Donnie Obreiter, B-29 DOC director of maintenance. “The B-29 represented the reach and capability of American airpower, while the P-51 provided the escort and protection that allowed crews to complete some of the most demanding missions of the war. Seeing these aircraft together honors the teamwork and sacrifice of the men who flew them.”

Ramp access during Lunken Airport Days will be free for the public. Cockpit tour access for B-29 DOC will be $10 per person or $20 per family. Cockpit tour tickets can be purchased the days of the event. “Having the B-29 and P-51 together on the ramp in Cincinnati is a rare and meaningful opportunity to showcase two legendary aircraft that played vital roles in achieving Allied victory during World War II,” said Jim Stitt, Cincinnati Warbirds EAA Squadron 18 commanding officer. “When people see these airplanes side by side, they gain a deeper appreciation for the scale of the missions flown, the teamwork required to accomplish them, and the courage of the crews who served aboard these iconic warbirds.”
