B-29 DOC & P-51 Gunfighter to Land at Evansville Wartime Museum this Summer

Two iconic World War II-era warbirds will land at the Evansville Wartime Museum and Evansville Regional Airport as part of the B-29 DOC History Restored Tour, July 30 through August 2, 2026.

DOC is one of 1,644 Boeing B-29 Superfortress bombers built in Wichita, Kansas, during World War II, and today, it is one of only two still airworthy and flying. The P-51 Gunfighter, a D-model Mustang, is equally rare, with fewer than 150 of the roughly 15,000 produced during the war still in existence.

“Hosting these two historic aircraft in Evansville carries special meaning because our city played an important role in America’s World War II production effort and today stands as a World War II Heritage City,” said Evansville Wartime Museum Administrator Meredith Marshall.  “From Republic Aviation’s P-47 Thunderbolt factory to the LST Shipyard and the Evansville Ordinance Plant, Evansville helped supply the tools that supported victory overseas, and this visit is a powerful way to honor that legacy. It provides unique and up-close lessons of history that bring the legacies of the Greatest Generation alive.”

Both warbirds will be available for public ramp access when they are not operating ride flights. Cockpit tours will be available for B-29 DOC throughout the event. General event admission will be $20 per person (ages 16 and up) $10 per child (ages 5-15), ages 0-4 are free, and $60 per family of four. General admission tickets can be purchased at the event. Ride flight ticket prices vary depending upon the aircraft and the seat position; ride tickets are on sale now (www.b29doc.com/rides and www.p51gunfighter.com/schedule).

“Aircraft like DOC and Gunfighter represent the innovation, craftsmanship, and determination that defined America’s wartime manufacturing effort,” said Steve Zimmerman, B-29 DOC aircraft commander. “Bringing these two warbirds to Evansville highlights the connection between the workers on the home front and the air crews who answered the call during World War II.”

The partnership between DOC, Gunfighter and the Evansville Wartime Museum shares the joint mission of all three organizations: honoring the Greatest Generation and preserving the stories and legacies of the people whose sacrifice, service, and hard work helped shape the outcome of World War II.

“Evansville’s own wartime manufacturing heritage makes this event especially meaningful for our team,” said P-51 Gunfighter pilot John Hullsiek. “Together, DOC and Gunfighter tell the story of the people who designed, built, maintained, and flew these legendary aircraft during World War II. And it’s our mission to ensure their legacies are remembered and shared for generations to come.”
