B-29 DOC is one of 1,644 B-29 bombers built by the Boeing Company in Wichita, Kansas, during World War II, and among nearly 4,000 B-29s produced overall. DOC is one of only two remaining airworthy B-29s in the world. P-51 Gunfighter is a North American P-51 D Model Mustang built the same year as DOC in 1945, before it was assigned to the “Mighty Eighth” Air Force in England during the war. DOC and Gunfighter

“The B-29 Superfortress and P-51 Mustang each carry powerful legacies that represent America’s air power and ingenuity during World War II,” said Josh Wells, B-29 DOC executive director. “Having these two historic warbirds on tour together offers a unique chance for people to engage with history in a way that makes it come to life with up close and personal access to aviation and military history.”

These aircraft were the result of America’s powerful wartime factories, where workers turned out airplanes, tanks, munitions, and other vital supplies to support the war effort. The arrival of the P-51 Mustang late in the war provided critical escort protection for B-17 and B-29 bomber crews, significantly increasing the effectiveness and survivability of Allied bombing missions.

“Having P-51 Gunfighter join forces with the B-29 DOC on tour brings to life the teamwork that defined World War II aviation,” said Gunfighter Team Manager Larry Lumpkin. “These aircraft tell a powerful story—bombers and fighters working side by side to protect freedom. Together, they give people today an unforgettable chance to connect with the history and heroism of the Greatest Generation.”

Tickets for both B-29 DOC and P-51 Gunfighter Flight Experience rides are on sale now. Information about the individual events, including opportunities for ground and cockpit tours at events when the aircraft are not flying, can be found at www.b29doc.com/events.
