B-29 DOC and P-51 Gunfighter in the San Diego region, Sept. 26-28

DOC and Gunfighter

The iconic B-29 DOC and P-51 Gunfighter, two of the most renowned aircraft of World War II, will be in the San Diego region from September 26 to 28.

B-29 DOC will be on static display at the MCAS Miramar Air Show, while Gunfighter will be available for ride flights during the show, operating from Gillespie Field, just a few miles away from the air show grounds in El Cajon, CA.

“Ground and cockpit access to historic warbirds at air shows, along with the opportunity for people to take a ride on these airplanes, makes history come alive and provides unique experiences with history that books and documentaries simply can’t provide,” said B-29 DOC Chief Pilot Mark Novak. “When you stand beneath a B-29 or look into the cockpit of a P-51, history comes alive—you can see, touch, and feel the stories of the men and women who fought to protect freedom.”

B-29 DOC is one of 1,644 B-29 bombers built by the Boeing Company in Wichita, Kansas, during World War II, and among nearly 4,000 B-29s produced overall. DOC is one of only two remaining airworthy B-29s in the world. P-51Gunfighter is a North American P-51 D Model Mustang built the same year as DOC in 1945, before it was assigned to the “Mighty Eighth” Air Force in England during the war.

It’s the first time Gunfighter has been to San Diego and Southern California.

“Taking a ride P-51 Gunfighter is more than just a thrill—it’s a chance to step into the shoes of the fighter pilots who escorted bombers and defended freedom during World War II,” said Jeff Linebaugh, Gunfighter pilot and ride coordinator. “When the engine roars to life and you take to the skies, history isn’t just told—it’s felt.”

P-51 Gunfighter ride flight tickets are on sale for flights operating out of Gillespie Field, Sept. 26-28, at www.b29doc.com/gunfighter and www.p51gunfighter.com/schedule.

B-29 DOC will be on static display Friday, Sept. 26, through Sunday, Sept. 28, for air show attendees. For more information about the MCAS Miramar Air Show, visit www.miramarairshow.com
